Course Syllabus

Math II Honors

Fall Semester 2015

Miss Groff

DESCRIPTION:  The Math II course will provide the students with content from Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry.  The concepts covered in Math II will be built upon the knowledge that the students learned in Math I.  The students will be held accountable for their complete understanding of the material.  It is their responsibility to ask questions, participate, and seek help if needed.  The course is aligned with the Common Core curriculum through the Eight Mathematical Practices.  The students have a required final exam created by the state of NC known as the MSL (Measures of Student Learning).

CLASS WEBSITE:    Canvas

Students are expected to use the website regularly for assignments, resource materials, notes, etc.  In addition, information about the new Common Core curriculum as it relates to Math II will be posted on the site.

REMIND101:   If students and parents would like to enroll in Remind101 the enrollment codes are dependent on which block the student has math.  I use Remind101 to send out reminders throughout the day through texting.  The application is a safe form of communicating because it does not disclose any personal phone numbers or information.  It is not a requirement for the students to enroll, but it is another helpful tool.

MATERIALS:

Pencils

3 – ring notebook                                 Notebook paper

Composition notebook                         TI – 84 calculator

All of these materials should be brought to class every day, unless instructed otherwise.

Calculator Note:  Technology is an essential element in mathematics, and each student must have access to a personal calculator for Math II.  The purpose of the calculator, however, is not to replace basic math or algebra skills.  As a result, on many tests and quizzes students will not be permitted to use the calculator.  We will use the graphing calculator as a tool to explore higher-level concepts and applications.  Forthcoming state exams will include calculator and non-calculator sections.  Calculators can be checked out of the media center.

TESTS and QUIZZES Tests and most quizzes will be announced in advance.  Typically there is one test and multiple quizzes per unit.

HOMEWORK:  All homework assignments will be discussed in class and may be graded for

accuracy and/or effort.  Homework is a necessary and an extremely important part of the Math II course.  It must be completed on a daily basis in order to achieve success.  All work must be shown; only answers will NOT BE ACCEPTED and will result in a zero for the grade for that assignment.  Each problem and diagram, if applicable, must be copied with an attempt at a solution. I must be able to see and follow your work in order to help you. Late work will NOT BE ACCEPTED.

NOTEBOOKS:  An organized notebook is also vital for success.  Sections should be designated for Notes, Homework, Classwork, and Graded Assignments.  Other sections can be included according to the needs of the individual student.

ATTENDANCE:  Being present in class each day is crucial to achievement.  Students must be in class for at least 75 of the 90 minute class in order to be counted present and may not miss more than 7 days of class during the semester.  If a student misses class, it is his/her responsibility to get notes and assignments from our class Canvas website, and a classmate, and then follow up with me.  Make-up work due to illness or any other excused absence must be completed within two days of returning to school, according to school policy.

GRADING POLICY:  This class will be on a points system.

                                                Tests                                                                ~ 90-100 points

                                                Homework                                                      ~ 10 points/assignment

                                                Projects                                                           ~ 70-100 points

*Final exam (no exemptions) will count 25% of the course grade.

*Grades may be viewed online through Powerschool

HONOR and RESPONSIBILITY:  In our Math II class, each assignment is to be completed on your own.  Receiving help is permissible and encouraged; however, please be sure that the assignment you turn in for credit is your own.  Help is defined as additional instructions, explanations, examples, and the sharing of ideas, but not doing or showing the particular assigned problem for, or to, someone.

EXPECTATIONS:  Students are expected, on a daily basis, to copy notes and all examples during class.  In addition, students should make corrections on homework assignments and add notes to the homework when it is discussed.  Students are expected to ask questions, answer questions, and volunteer during class.  In conclusion, students must be active participants, not spectators!

CONTACT INFORMATION:  The best way to contact me is by e-mail and I will communicate with you mostly by e-mail or messages on Canvas.  Parents, please be sure to complete your email address at the bottom of page 3 and check/sign that you are okay with me discussing your child’s grade in an e-mail.  Please contact me with any questions or concerns at Marvin Ridge (704-290-1520) or by email (kelsey.groff@ucps.k12.nc.us).  I look forward to an enjoyable and most successful semester!
