Social Studies Grade Syllabus
Welcome to social studies. I am looking forward to a wonderful year of learning! I have been teaching at Brown Summit since 2008 and am honored to be given the opportunity to be a part of such an outstanding school.
8th Grade will be studying United States history with an emphasis on the role North Carolina has played in our nation’s development. The units are broken down as follows: Unit 1: Migration and Colonization; Unit 2: American Revolution; Unit 3: Early Republic; Unit 4: Union in Peril; Unit 5: Industrialization; Unit 6: Modern War; Unit 7: Social Movements; Unit 8: Post Cold War to Present
Information about homework, classwork and tests can be accessed in Canvas. Locating me under Staff on the Brown Summit Website will direct you to my Canvas page.

Homework:
The only assignment scored as homework is your Vocabulary 20, 10 and 1. This is because this is the only assignment I do not give much class time to work on. It is your responsibility to complete this at home.
Step 1 - 20 - You are required to write a definition, in your own words, for 20 of the terms from the Unit Vocabulary list into your journals. There are more than 20 terms on this list. Choose the terms that are most unfamiliar to YOU.
Step 2 - 10 - Then, choose 10 terms from the remaining list (therefore, use words you did not define) and write a sentence using the term correctly.
Step 3 – 1 – Finally, choose one Key Person from this Unit and write an informative paragraph explaining who this person was and why they are connected to this Unit of Study.
Vocabulary will always due 2 days before the unit exam!
Grading Policy for ALL work:
- 1 Day late = -15%
- 2 Days late = - 40%
- More than 2 days late = “0” (And you are still required to complete the assignment…in HW Club, if necessary)
Anchor Activities
Anchor Activities are assignments that you can do for extra credit. They can be found in Canvas. If you do not see an activity there that interests you but you want to learn more about something related to our topic, come talk with Mrs. Perdue and we will create one. If you complete work in class you are to be working on one of these assignments.
